A World Phone should work anywhere in the world
The first requirement for a world phone is that it will work anywhere in the world and to do that it must be compatible with a network that is available all over the world. The only network that fully satisfies this condition is GSM which stands for Global System for Middle Communications.World Phone - GSM Network
GSM is the predominant global technology and is used in Europe, where it's the standard, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as much of Asia and the Middle East. It is also used extensively in the United States where AT&T and T-Mobile operate GSM networks.CDMA Network - World Phone ?
CDMA, which stands for Code Division Multiple Access is the second most used tecnology, but it has significantly less worldwide coverage than GSM. One of the biggest markets for CDMA is the United States, where it is used by Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and several smaller carriers such as U.S. Cellular. Outside the States, you can find CDMA networks in Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, South Korea, parts of the Caribbean, Latin America, and a handful of other smaller countries. If you know you will never need the use of the phone in Europe then CDMA is probably okay but a phone limited to CDMA technology does not in my mind satisfy the first requirement of a world phone. What is a World Phone ?
As already stated a World Phone is very simple a phone that can be used anywhere in the world. Since GSM is the only technology available worldwide to qualify as a world phone a phone must be GSM compatible, however not all GSM phones are world phones because within GSM different frequencies are used. A World Phone is therefore a phone that is compatible with all the four major GSM frequencies that are used worldwide, in other words a Quad Band Phone. Unless you are sure you will never travel to the USA, Canada or Mexico we strongly advise you to restrict your choice of phone to a Quad Band Phone.Beware Dual Band phones will not work anywhere in the above three mentioned countries and the third frequency of the Tri-Band phone will enable those phones to work only in parts of those countries. Since nowadays there is virtually no price difference for the extra frequency bands, it is only common sense that unless you can only find the features you need in a Tri-band or a Dual Band, and you don't need to use the phone in the countries above mentioned, you restrict your choice of phones to Quad Band Phones.
